1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 automatic transmition problem
I have a 97 ram 1500 4x4 with a std. duty 4sd. automatic trans. it has a cc torque converter, with a 231 hd transfer case. It has a 5.9 Ltr. engine with 258,376 miles on it. the vin code is "Z". the modle of truck is a Laramie "SLT". If it will help it was born 7/1997. the problem i am having is after I let the truck warm up , when I move the shifter from reverse to drive, the truck stalls. I return the shifter to park, turn the key and the engine starts right up with no hesitation, shift to drive again and off I go. This happens sometimes after I go into a store and start the truck again, but not always. I'm not familiar with transmitions and any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you!
Might be an issue with your idle air controller (IAC). Have you cleaned the well where it sits in the back of the throttle body? I believe 2 screws hold the IAC in-place on the rear of the throttle body. They are famous for carbon build-up in that area and cause erratic idle issues, especially when putting the truck in gear as you described.
To AtomicDog, I just replaced the (IAC) yesturday and cleaned the TBI unit and a new gasket, same issue occurs. To Moparite, the battery is less than 6 months old . A friend of mine asked me if that tranny has a torque converter lock out switch ,
I can't find any info yes /no. Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places.

The overdrive switch on my truck is in the dash, to the upper right side of the steering wheel. The fog light switch is right next to it.
Is the check engine light on? If so, any pending or stored codes?

If they where replaced did you clear the codes and see if they come back? Might want to check what the fuel pressure is at first start up.
