Default 96 1500 Upstream 02 Sensor Question/Confirmation

Hey Everyone,
Finally ended up with another 2nd gen recently and boy was it not taken care of properly. Truck is a 96 1/2 ton 2wd with the 5.2 and around 160k. Was used as a farm truck for a bit and younger driver had it before that, so it got the full brunt rural teenager with a V8 truck thrown at it lol.

Details of concern:
Previous owner cut the cat out completely and "welded" in a Walker y-pipe collector assumedly because it was clogged plus in NY this year of vehicle is emissions exempt so why not delete it
Upstream 02 sensor is just cut out with a dangling wire harness over the transmission
Downstream 02 sensor is still in the pipe and hooked up

My main concern at the time is the Upstream 02 Sensor. Eventually a converter will make it's way back on the truck after fixing other issues, but for now should I just hook the Upstream 02 harness into the bung for the downstream so at least it's getting an A/F reading and leave the downstream unplugged entirely? I'm worried about drivability if I were to just leave the Upstream sensor unplugged for now, but if it doesn't make enough of a difference that I have some time to work out other kinks and then come back to the exhaust, then I am okay with that as well.

Take it to a muffler shop, they can weld in an O2 bung. On the 96 and up trucks, you really need both for the system to operate properly.

Personally I'd fit the upstream sensor -- that's the one that strives for stoich. Bungs are cheap online. I was gonna make one but not worth the time.

Unibit + bright blue light machine = done

Alright, so this at least validates my concerns. I have access to a factory Y-pipe with the cat still in it, so I will rig that all up and double check the cat isn't clogged once I get the intake manifold back on the truck. Fixing other people's modifications is obnoxious but should be worth it. I just have to keep reminding myself that the truck was 600 bucks and the frame is stupid clean for 20+ year old truck in NYS

Yeah, I am thinkin' you can put a fair bit of time/effort/money into that, and still be ahead of the game.
