I live in cal I have a 97 1500 w360 gas engine it had a automatic trans it failed tree times
then I bought an 3rd gen gatrag 238 off Craigslist I took a year to gather all the parts
pedals flywheel manual wiring harness sent pcu off to flash new trans because after I put the 238 gatrag in every thing worked good my gas milage was noticing way better power I can out run any Chevy 350 trucks I love this trans I've had it in for 4 years now not a problem clutch is still good I haul cement wood a lot of weight no problem
I can't get the speedometer to work because the gatrag takes a pulse type speed sensor and the pcu on the 97 dodge is a geardrive electronic type the wiring harness I put in my truck was from a 1997 2500 manual tans so I really don't for sure know what sensor came on the truck that the wiring harness came off of other than to say it was and is the manual tran wiring harness it has two wires in one harness for the trans I
perhaps someone could tell me how I could get the pcu to read the 2006 238 gatrag speed sensor or I won't be able to smog in California this time two years ago I lived in Placer County in calif and most of that county don't require a smog certificate there still 8 differant area code spead out in four counties in California that currently are not requiring smog thank you

 

The 97 originally used a VSS in the tailshaft of the trans, or t-case, depending on the number of drive wheels. Yeah, it was gear driven, but, still, a tone generator..... I suspect the only difference between the 97, and 3rd gen sensors would be the count on pulse per mile. Pretty sure there are neat little boxes out there in the world that would adapt the signals, so your 97 would read the newer sensor. Just need to know what the difference is there.
