Engine is running rich
I've got a 97 dodge ram 1500 with 5.2 and I think it could be running rich. It's real low on power so I was checking for vacuum leaks and sprayed a little bit of carb cleaner into the throttle body to get an idea of what it would sound like if I happened to find one and it stalled out immediately. There's usually a strong gas smell and it doesn't backfire through the intake but you can hear slight pops and feel jerks when it's idling through the exhaust. I know it burns a little oil but I figure thats normal for an engine this old, but it does smoke white on startup and less while driving. It starts every turn of the key but I've noticed it doesn't rev up that high on startup (probably around 1200 rpms). How can I confirm if it's running rich or not and why would it be? Also the only codes it has is vehicle speed sensor, cruise control, and 02 sensor. And I have a feeling it might be the 02 which is gonna suck because the previous owner did something and I can't even find where it plugs into, and I have dual exhaust with no cats so nowhere to put the actual sensor into either.

What O2 code are you getting? 97 should have two sensors, unless you are california emissions... One pre-cat, one post cat. I believe the connectors for them are cleverly concealed on top of the trans. (almost impossible to see, merely difficult to touch.
)
If your front O2 sensor is there, plug in with a scanner, (that can read live data...) and see what fuel trims look like.

What are the Possible Causes of the Code P0152 Dodge?
- Faulty Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2
- Intake air leaks may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 harness is open or shorted
- Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Inappropriate fuel pressure
- Faulty fuel injectors
