Smart Control Automotive Grade Linux / Android Auto
I'm curious if anyone on this forum has played around with putting smart tech into their older vehicles. I'm thinking about deploying AGL "Automotive Grade Linux" into my dodge. I will probably install a smart panel in the main center. Update the instrument cluster with a smart panel and either a smart rearview mirror or build a replacement overhead console with a smart small panel on it. I'll install full surround camera's for things like security, accident avoidance, lane departure.
What I'm curious about is if anyone has dealt with creating smart switches in cars. I've done a ton of work on my home building my own HomeKit sensors and modules. I'm sure I could use the same ESP32 boards to build smart switches for car stuff as well. Just curious if anyone has already started down this path. Is there any open source smart switch controlling projects that implement the data back into the CAN bus. That way I could name the smart switch. Driver Seat and it'd present itself over the can bus to the infotainment system for control. I plan on using either MegaSquirt, Haltech or Holley Terminator X as the new engine management system. If I recall Holly Terminator X can directly control the 46RE, 47RE and 48RE transmission directly on the ECU like how dodge does it. Otherwise one could buy Anteater as a TCU to control the transmission.
Let's get this part out of the way. Yes it's dumb. Yes I'm a complete moron for wanting todo this. Yes this isn't the correct way to do this. Correct your the most brilliant person in the world and only your view of the world is correct.
Hopefully that will agitate the people whom stop any forms of actual intelligent discord on forums and it will serve as a way to bring all their attention to this post there by allowing other posts to maybe get civil discussion and forward progress....

I'm enjoying using Android Auto with my smartphone to access a huge amount of music loaded into my phone, however, that's on a newer daily driver Toyota. I'm about to add a new head unit into a Nissan Altima to make Android Auto available on that car as well.
As for doing what you've described on my '96 Dodge Ram 2500, I have not really thought about doing such at this time. I'm certainly interested in what you're doing. Sounds like you have the time, capabilities and funding to pull off your desired upgrades. Please keep us posted with your project updates.
