I recently purchased a 2001 ram 1500 with the 5.9 magnum in it and at idle it almost sounds like a diesel. I have had truck get a knock on me before and it does not sound like that either. I’m not sure if it’s a knock or maybe lifters or something. It has thrown one code for a cylinder 5 misfire as well so it could be related. As I said it is a truck new to me and I’m not sure if it sounds like this all the time or not. If anyone here has any insight into this issue that would be great. Thanks

 

Do a compression check. Dry first, then wet, see what the numbers look like.

Oil level up to snuff? May not hurt to change it, make sure the right stuff is in there.

Is it top end noise? Or bottom?
