My 98 dodge 1500 def almost caught fire last nite! It started smoking like crazy! I had to hurry up and rip the wires away so it wouldn't catch fire...how would I fix this problem? Also to have my headlights on and all I have to pull my blinker switch and hold it for them to work I've tried and new blinker switch new headlight switch new headlights everything else what could I do to make it to where I actually have headlights and don't have to hold them and not burn up while I'm driving

 

What was burning?

 

That sounds like an issue with the multi function switch, The burning is another issue but my guess is you may have had both high and low beams on that created to much heat.

 

Repeat the question of what was burning or on fire? I think all 98s had the pull style switch, which were notorious for melting the connector/harness.

I agree is sounds like a multifunction switch issue currently causing your problems, but you already replaced that? with new?

 

And, if you just replaced the headlight switch without replacing the harness wiring that plug into that switch, you likely didn't fix the complete issue, as many times, the original headlight switch wiring harness connectors will get loose from heat and the wiring starts to melt, too. Once both the headlight switch and wiring harness are fixed properly, It's best to alleviate future problems by putting the headlights on relays so that the headlight switch doesn't have to pull so much current to run the headlights.
