Default belts and things

yet another question?!

was under the hood today while truck was running, and noticed a sound that kinda sounded like something was kicking in and out (on off)

looked around and saw that one of the pullies on the front of the engine would spin, then it would slowly come to a stop, then speed up again, while stoping and starting it would make a sound as if a compressor was turning on and off)

is this bad, or is it just maybe the a/c compressor (even tho it is not turned on in the cab)

thanks in advance

Yes it is the AC compressor and it is supposed to kick in and out even if it is not on in the cab.

There is a reason for this to happen and I even heard it once but damned if I can remember why. Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

The ac compressor runs during defrost. It has something to do with preventing the windows from fogging up during the process. Not sure exactly how it does it though.

Using it in the winter helps remove moisture from the air/windows inside the cab. That's why it turns on with the defroster.

It's also good to use it once and a while during the winter months. It helps keep the seals oiled and helps prevent loss of refridgerant.
