This is my first post of many to come. This truck has sat not running for many years. Has alot of rust to take care of. Unfortunately the rust has removed the numbers from the rear axle. The wheel seal is leaking but I don't know the gear size?
From the glove box I know it's a Dana M60 with 4:10 gear ratio. Is it a 9.75in? Or how would I know before tearing it apart.

Should be able to just tell the parts guy its a Dana 60, and he should be able to get you the correct parts. Part number I get is 3496557.... Fits 84 to 2003......

This is the seal that goes in the back of the drum, to keep gear lube in the diff.

 

They asked me if I had a 9.25, 9.75, 10 or 11 inch?
Only came up with 1 option for the diff cover for a Dana 60. They also asked for the gear size for the cover gasket? By bolt pattern and shape I guessed it should be the 9.75". This side of the truck is new to me.

I do believe the ring gear is 9.75" on a Dana 60. I don't think it changed with the different GVWR options that were available. The 10 and 11 I would assume are Dana 70 and Dana 80 respectively. The 9.25 is a halfton Chrysler axle. Must be a rather generic lookup being as it has all the axle options from that year in Ram pickups.

 

Yes, a Dana 60 has a 9-3/4" (9.75") ring gear. As long as it's a Dana 60 with drum brakes, that's the seal you want. If it's a disc brake Dana 60, the seal may be different.. I mention this as some of the very late model 2nd gen Ram 2500 trucks has disc brake rears..

You need to read your BOM, There are two seals(47507/43146) it could be and the BOM # will tell you which one it is.

 

There lies my issue. The BOM numbers have been rusted away. I can barely make out where it should have been.

 

Wire brush, and some PB Blaster should make them legible again.

 

I have already tried the wire brush. I will get some PB Blaster and see if it helps.
