Default breather vs PVC valve

Is there a difference between the two? Does it make a difference if naturally aspired? 1997 Ram 1500, 5.2, asking for a friend.........

Breather is the intake side of the PCV system, the PCV valve limits flow rate, and allows crankcase gases to be recirculated back into the intake. Serves a couple purposes.... First, those gases are just being vented into the atmosphere, (emissions...) second, a slight vacuum in the crank case helps the piston rings seal better. (more power) PCV valves are cheap, and actually worth having.

Yeah a slight vacuum on the crankcase is theoretically good.

Beyond that, speed density doesn't seem to care.

If you're building for 'wheeling and plan to wind up on your lid or side, the PCV is one easy route for oil to go from crankcase to intake, which can be a problem.

With MAF you absolutely cannot substitute a breather as you'll create a massive vacuum leak -- not applicable to 2nd Gen Rams.

The Ford Windsors used to SOAK their air filters with engine oil once they developed blow-by, which was always. So guys would disable or re-route the system, myself included.
