98 Ram 46re transmission whine and sluggish power
I have a 5.2 98 ram 4wd with 170k miles. I have a check engine light for the transmission shift solenoid and replaced with a bog Warner solenoid. I still have a code and my transmission shifts but is slower than slow, my fuel mileage is out the window, and my transmission whines, only when accelerating and I’m positive it’s from the transmission. Any takers on what I need to replace. I’ve tried the 8 pin connector and it still wines and is very slow, fluid level is good. It was low at first but I filled it in neutral and it’s good, and I drove it but same problem. I think I’ll order a whole shift kit with all the sensors. Any help?? Thanks
Shift kit probably isn't really necessary..... when working right, my trans shifts pretty good.... When mine was giving me fits, I replaced the governor pressure sensor and solenoid, and the output speed sensor. (its on the outside of the trans, so, very easy to replace.) That solved 99% of my issues.
The shift solenoid the code is referencing is likely the O/D solenoid.... That usually comes as a set with the TCC solenoid as well. (if one is bad, replacing both is a good plan.)
As for the whine..... given your mileage..... it may be getting on toward rebuild time.

the whine just started, I bought the truck recently and there was no check engine, I would manual shift from 1-2-d and everything worked great, my check engine light turned on and everything stopped working and then that’s when the whining noise came into play. Before that it was perfect. Also there is a 3-4 spring that is known to break in these trucks, how big of an issue does that cause, I’ll look into the parts you also suggested. When u had the same problem was ur vehcile sluggish and did it whine? Thanks for the help
Mine just didn't shift when it should, and would drop into neutral at stops, and POUND into gear when you gave it a little gas. That really sucked in drive-thru lines..... That, and holding first gear to 4K RPM wasn't good either.
Never made any rude noises though...
The spring being bad can cause issues.... but, not sure how that plays out in the real world.
