Default Possible transmission substitutes

Hey all, I was wondering if there are any transmissions that I could replace a 42re with in my 1998 Ram 1500 2wd. I'm kind of weary about this transmission and when she goes I wouldn't mind putting a stronger one in there.

Also stupid question, I was wondering if anyone had put a th400 in a ram or was wondering if it was even possible. I'm asking because my dad has one laying in the shed and it would be damn near indestructible with this little v6 and I wouldn't have to worry about transmission issues again probably

.

If it were me, I'd rebuild the 42RE with beefing it up in mind to make it's weak points stronger. You can add clutches, install aluminum actuator pistons instead of plastic, Transgo SureCure/shift kit, remove the check valve that tends to clog up in the return line, etc.. I had this type of rebuild done to my 46RE after it failed and it's now stout and stable. The PCM helps with shifting and it keeps track of any trouble codes set off by the transmission's electronic components. To install the TH400, you will need an adapter bracket for the bellhousing and likely cross member modifications, at a minimum. You will also loose overdrive capabilities with a TH400 that save you on fuel mileage vs. the 42RE.

3.9 bolt pattern is the same as the 5.2/5.9 is it not? If that is indeed the case, then a 44, or 46RE will bolt right in, and hook right up.

Just get the correct year, Before and after 2000 had changes. Best upgrade would be a ZF8 but that a whole different story.
