Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK there is only one JTEC PCM hardware and with the correct programming they should work in any vehicle.

Not sure if that's the case or not. It would be helpful to know for sure if that's the case.

I do know that I can swap my PCM with another that's used with a 5.9 engine and automatic trans & transfer case and it will work fine since '96 - '97 don't require the VIN to be programmed in the PCM for it to work in another early OBD2 Dodge truck. Later model Dodge trucks have to have the appropriate VIN coded into the PCM for it to work.

Correction: There are two PCM generations, JTEC and JTEC+ (99 up). Also Chrysler used different "stuffing options" meaning they removed driver electronics that were not needed on a specific model. Anecdotal evidence claims that the 96 PCMs have a different programming interface and require some additional fiddling but can be updated to the newer interface. V6 and V8 PCMs in the Dodge trucks (Ram and Dakota) are supposedly interchangeable and just need the correct firmware.
