I just bought a camp trailer, 5000lbs, and ordered a receiver hitch. Receiver hitch is in the mail. Crawled under the truck today and notice the frame is bent where the receiver mounts.. Can I heat this up and bend it straight enough to hook up the receiver hitch?? Can this be repaired/straightened out?? I'll attach pics.. I've been driving it for about a year, runs and drives great.
Heat might get it straight, however I was always taught heating a frame takes the structural integrity out of the steal? I tried straightening a frame horn once in front of the core support for bumper mounting and i had a bit of a struggle, it was kind of a junker anyway so i didn't really care what happening in the end
I wouldn't have any concerns about heating the rear of the frame like that, but that's gonna be a LOT of heat to get that area straight. A body shop with a frame machine might get there.
Note there's a possibility that damage was actually caused by a previous hitch. Guys think they're cool to leave a drop draw bar in their hitch ("I'll show that Prius!!") but all you do is provide a big lever arm to bend your frame like that.
If it were me I'd pull the bed. I'd likely wind up cutting that out and either trying to straighten in my press, source a donor piece, or make something from scratch
I second removing/lift the bed up. You will probably need to heat different sections(worse bend first) then move to another and so on till you get where you like it. A big pipe wrench will come in handy.
