Hi guys, I drive a 97 2500 with the 5.9 magnum. so the other day I was cruising on the highway and all off a sudden there’s a loud bang and my cab fills with smoke, so I pull over and pop hood, the crankcase breather(or whatever it is that is on driver side valve cover that runs into air filter) has popped out of the valve cover. Oil is everywhere (I’m assuming that’s what the smoke was), so I shoved it back in there and limped it back into town and parked it, smoke is just rolling out of exhaust and when I get home I pop hood for closer inspection and smoke is coming out of throttle body when I open it, oil fill hole, and crankcase breather. I know whatever it is is not good at all but I was just curious if you guys had an input.
How many miles is on your engine? Sounds like you're going to need to perform a compression check on each cylinder (at a minimum) to determine what may be causing your issue.
If you are getting enough pressure in the crank case to launch the breather, probably holed a piston. Try a compression test. Bet ya got one (or more...) at zero.

190,xxx miles on it, I will do that tomorrow and get back to you, thank you.

Exactly what I was thinking, but didn't want to jinx the guy/engine. If there's a hole in the piston, may have dropped a valve or valve seat to cause the issue.

Given the mileage, wouldn't surprise me if it was a victim of spark knock.
