Default 5.2 Low Idle

Hey all!

I’ve been having some idle issues with my 5.2 magnum/46rh. The engine runs and idles awesome when cold but once it’s warmed up i have an incredibly low idle when i shift into gear, it’s never stalled but will sit on the first line on the tach. If i shift into gear and the idle drops, shifting back into park or neutral brings it right back to a normal idle. I’m thinking maybe my torque converter isn’t happy? Just hit 270,000 miles, tranny shifts great tho. any thoughts?

Might want to try removing the throttle body and give it a good cleaning, especially in the back of the throttle body where the Idle Air Controller (IAC) screws in. Pickup a new throttle body gasket after cleaning, so the throttle body seals up against intake manifold. The well in the back of the throttle body is famous for collecting grime and gunk there and may cause the IAC piston issues seating properly. Best to remove the IAC to properly clean the well area of the throttle body. You can also check for any pending or stored codes to see if they point to any IAC issues..

Hey thanks for the reply.

My apologies as i probably should have mentioned what i’ve already done in my original post. I did a pretty thorough cleaning of the throttle body about a month ago as i thought the issue was there(may be). It was incredibly dirty, especially the iac port. Unfortunately this 5.2 is in a obd1 95 jeep, although i do not have a cel. I have been thinking of forking over for a mopar iac as i’m currently running an autozone.

How long has the IAC been in it? And did you have the same issue with the one that was in it? Also how old is the battery and it's condition? Weak batteries can cause idle issues.
