Default Inner axel seals done

I got my driver's side inner axel seal done and the diff back in and bolted up. I go to put the intermediate shift back in and it won't seat all the way back in the diff. Im not sure why. I push it in a dodge twist and it's hitting something or not going in. Thoughts? I imagine I was just impatient but it took alittle persuasion to get out so maybe getting it back in will also be some persuasion

Maybe the side gear is slightly out of position? Having a second person to help would likely make this exercise easier.
