Hey! glad found this forum, i'm looking at 2nd gens and read about the common issues. Had an issue come up during a test drive today on one i was ready to buy not as bad a beater as i've seen but definitely need maintenance at 180k.

making a whirring or maybe a clutch slipping sound only on take off. It's tough to tell as it has a flowmaster so can't hear jack. I'm light footed and wouldn't have noticed till i rolled windows down and noticed an additional sound only on take off that went away after a couple seconds
this made it sorta feel like it was slipping but that may have been in my head, or if it was it was slight. Given i'm deaf in one ear lol it's notable i could tell it over the flow masters.

Had to be torque converter? it's tough for me to tell as the 5.9 magnum was not fast off the line that's for sure or maybe it was in 2nd gear? thing shifted so smooth i couldn't tell. Pulled into a quiet parking lot , stopped and started 50 times and it's for sure
on take off and goes away after about 2 seconds. Same when in manual 1st (though didn't seem as bad) , and somewhat in 2nd. Rest of driving seemed fine i didn't notice a thing...just that sound and (possible slight slippage) on take off.

Can the torque converter, governor and solenoid,etc only have those symptoms on take off?

I gotta think given the reputation and 180k it's gotta besuspect. Was prepared to do a transmission in one of those but hoping not for a year or so since not a daily driver. Or do these torque converters have a notable sound on take off?

Thanks for any info obviously i think i gotta test drive a few more of these. I like em because they're generally simple i can fix stuff with em and understand most of the diagnostics.

 

What year and model (1500, 2500, 3500, etc.) truck? Also, is the check engine light on? If so, any codes?

 

Did you check the trans fluid level and color?

 

Thanks for replies yes unfortunately my bluetooth reader wasn't pulling codes on this vehicle. Unfortunately I didn't think to check fluid level until i got home it's been a good
long while since i've looked at older vehicles, but yeah...too many missing links. Once i got home i realized i should check that. I may go back to look again, i have an older reader i should
have taken. More i thought about it the more i think something was definitely slipping there, i should have found an open road and stomped on it too. Had to be torque converter i'm hearing is all i could think
at that stage. Either way i assume with my hearing over the flowmaster lol can't be a good sign

 

Check in N, not P. Obviously take any necessary safety measures

 

I didn't hear it in neutral, but then again not really reverse so that doesn't make much sense.. was definenly worse in first than 2nd, unless...it's starting in second. Which that is making me wonder
as it sure seemed slow off line for a 5.9 liter truck

I'm gonna run by tomorrow and pull the codes with a different reader see if there's a pressure code of some type etc , check light was on but so was abs but abs went off.

 

What year and model (1500, 2500, 3500, etc.) truck? Just FYI, early model 2nd gen trucks are OBD1...

 

Oh sorry its a 199 1500 5.9 gas. Ohhh right good to know on the obd1 i figured it was some such, i didn't think when i went out to take my older one.

 

199? Missin' a digit there. Either that, or your truck is REALLY old.
