Default 1998 dodge ram 1500 5.9

My truck isn't registering that its in park i guess you could say ? I disconnected the linkage to shift it by hand just to see whats goin on ,it shifts into park but I can still roll the truck and it doesn't do anything when I turn the ignition only when its in neutral it will run, I replaced the neutral safety switch but it didnt solve my issue , any ideas ?

If you can move it into park by hand i think there is something wrong with your park rod/spring. Try putting it in first then lock the linkage, See if that makes any difference.

Is it actually in park though? If he can still roll the vehicle this would imply its either not in park, or that there is a mechanical failure of the parking pawl also. Being as it wont start in Park I would be led to believe its not fully seating in the park slot, even if the detent is felt.

is the parking pawl a difficult project , my understanding is that its in the tail shaft

It's something you never touch unless the transmission is apart. But if it is indeed in park and it still rolls somethings going on with it or the lever that applies the brake. If you drop the valve body remove it from the rooster comb, Do not pull it out. Not easy to get back in. If you position the lever on the trans to "1" first", Do the same with the same with gearshift then "tighten the linkage adjusting bolt" (lock) the linkage.
