5.9 Magnum, V8 air intake upgrades
So I am currently in the process of refurbishing my 99 Dodge ram 2500 4 x 4 5.9 gas V8 since I’m starting to wrap up paint and bodywork. I’m now moving onto maybe some more kind of reliability/performance upgrades I do plan on putting a exhaust system on the truck to get rid of the stock exhaust system, but I have been wondering about is it worth it to get a upgraded air intake over the stock one I’m just curious to see if anyone has any real experience and if they made any difference? And also let me know if there’s any other upgrades I should do to my truck. When I am working on this winter.
About the only option for intake upgrade would be the hughes air-gap intake. It requires some modifications to the fuel rail though.... (but, it comes with the stuff to do it...) It opens up the power band a bit, at the expense of some low-end torque...... (which you don't really wanna do to a truck....) Now, if you did other upgrades at the same time.... Say, something like an RV cam, that would offset the low-end loss, and give you better power across the RPM range. Keep in mind, that would also require a custom tune..... Which you could do yourself, with the right software.... or, pay someone else to write one for you. Question becomes, how deep do you want to go into it, and how much do you want to spend?
You might want to check out the kegger mod available from utawesomeperformance. There is a episode of enginmasters where they did dyno comparisons to the stock kegger. I believe it was done with carb instead of mpfi but retained a lot of the low end and gained some on the top end. This may be a better option if you are not ready to drop so much on the air gap mod.
