not any harder then the motor was made to work... it tweeks the computer and electrical system on the motor to... adjusts timing,, fuel injectors pulse widths.. .. the only added stress will be when your foot is glued to the floorboard.. smokin the tires

im not sure if you saw any of my other posts about my slight ping and what not,

im thinking of going to a slightly cooler plug, to see if it helps, but i know buy doing this my truck may idle a little ruff, and the plugs will gum up quicker...

will a hypertech programmer make my ping worse, or does it all depend on thy way i program it?

yea ive notice you got a slight ping problem.. id run cooler plugs and a cooler t-stat too... like a 180 t-stat... and switch to premium gas for a few tanks..helps tou alot!!! also .. have you cleaned your tb yet?

im not sure about the programer helping or hurting the ping..i know that you can program for what fuel u use..and that has something to do with it.. myself i havnt programed yet.. waiting on zeek's response on his hyperpac...

BTW.. hey guys.. wheres Zeek been? did he get deployed again?

About these hypertech programmers..... I own a 98' dodge ram 4x4 with the 5.9L. Only mod is a BluStream Exhaust system. The motor is still strong with 70K on it, but when im going 75 MPH down the wide open (as in no trees at all haha) North Dakota Interstates and i am going into a good head wind, it tends to want to kick into overdrive from time to time. Can anyone tell me if the hypertech would give my motor that little extra power it needs??? appreciate it!!!!

Uncertain if you have inspected to insure the engine isn't burning oil IE PCV valve or plenium gasket. Napa and Advance sells this stuff called Sea Foam, it works very well in cleaning carbon out of the motor. Follow the instructions and you will be AOK. Alot of oil deposits on the pistons and in the combustion chamber will cause hotspots and pinging. Need to get the topend of the motor clean and start from there. When the trucks where new I imagine they didn't ping or the Dodge engineers wouldn't have had so much timing advanced into the PCM, and one would think it would have been caught during road tests during development. You should be AOK once it's all cleaned out. As for the hypertech causing pinging, that's something that you may have depending on gas quality ect ect. I recommend probiably running 89 in the tank if you run the 87 program if you find that you have a pinging problem once you get it all cleaned out and going.

jnellydodge, I also have a 98 dodge Ram 4x4 5.9L, 99k miles, (still going strong), and I had the same problem as you are having. At 75 mph, strong head winds or slight inclines would make my truck down shift out of overdrive. Drove me crazy!! I don't think the miles had anything to do with it, cuz it has been this way even at 40k when I bought the truck.

A few weeks ago i bought a hypertech programmer III from truckaddons.com. Now I'm glad to say that I can now set the cruise control to 75mph and sit back and relax! I still have to take over on long steep inclines, but that's understandable. Except for the programmer, my motor and drive train are completely stock, AT, 32 inch tires, 3.55 gears.

Also, I was never able to squeal the rear wheels from a dead stop on dry pavement. Now I can. I have not towed my trailer yet with it. (that is the real reason I brought it). I have not measured mpg yet either.

I use the 87 octane program, and run the mid grade 88 octane gas. In NM your fuel choices are 86, 88, or 91. I use the Champion truck plugs. no ping yet.

Oh ya, I'm a new member to this forum, but have been reading it for about two years. Thanks for all the great advice guys! I'll put up some pics and info soon...
