I raced my neighbor in his 95 chevy half ton 4x4 auto 350 long bed 31 in tires with no lift....and I have a 98 dodge half ton 4x4 auto 318 shrt bed 33 in tires 3 in lift and beat him by 2...we raced twice and it was more the second time...we also hooked them up bumper to bumper and i just took off with him like he wasnt there his truck was roastin his tires the whole pull...we both have duals no cats....mine has posi but dont know how that would have made that much of a difference in the race since we didnt have traction problems

I got the '96 indy ram and have trounced several vortechs rear wheel drive w/posi, gibson super truck cat back, and volant coldair with ram air tube. Edged out two against my friend before the volant intake and destroyed him after. The ones i see on the hwy won't race me.

My dad's truck is a 93, it also has a 5.7 vortec.
Now there are some differences. I think the newer vortec's have roller cams and true fuel injection instead of throttle body injection.
In less i'm mistaken. But a vortec has a solid rear main seal, smaller bolt pattern on the flywheel, probly smaller flywheel, and 4 center intake bolts are strait where as a non vortec has angled center bolt holes. But I think vortec's were maid back till atleast 1990.

wow this is an old post.......one i started back in january. Anyways GM for 1996 retuned the 5.7, which is when they got a power, torque, and refinement boost. Also i know that my friends 96 i mentioned at the start of this post is quicker than mine, but that's about all it is...

I raced a guy from work he had 1/2 ton 2-wheel chevy . He had me by car length until about 85mph and my dodge started pullin past.
Once we got to 90 and up he hit his shut off and I left him in the dust. I like chevy a lot, but my dodge is the best truck I have ever owned.
