Default Rough Idle 5.9

I just bought my first dodge a 99' 2500 ram van I like it a lot. It was idleing a bit rough so I chaged the plugs, wires, cap, air filter, pcv, and breather but it still idles rough tired new gas 87 and dry gas also. Its not real bad just seems like its idleing to low. It only has 45k on it. It also sounds to be knocking a little but I'm not sure if its jus the normal sound of the engine or not. It runs great other than that. Any ideal would be apreciated. Thanks and love the Forum.

Check your IAC on the TB. That might be a bit gunked up and making it idle wierd. Knocking really isn't normal for these...but pinging is. If you know what the diffrence is.

The CEL isn't on but I guess it wouldn't hurt to see if I could pull a code from it. I'll try that today. I also will clean the IAC. Would a pluged cat cause a rough idle? Its hard to belive it could be that though with just 45k on it. The engine kinda has a tick to it but I dont think thats out of the ordinary I'm just not used to v8's.

A bad cat could cause it, but if it was bad enough to make idle rough it would probably completely kill the engine when you reved it up.

All of these frickin trucks idle poorly. I have taken mine to different dealerships, when I bought it new, and was told that "it was normal nothing is wrong". Now at 56k and a new fastman tb, new iac, tps, and map sensor (I replaced all of them at the same time I put on the new tb, just to see if it helped), the idle is still rough. But the tb did improve performance.

I run premium and have since new which is the only way to keep the knocking/pinging from happening.

I don't think you'll be able to correct that idle problem.

want a smooth idle...? get the Rhoads lifters... but be forewarned... you should have a bigger cam to get the most out of it.

when I had mine in you couldnt even tell the motor was on it was soo smooth.
