Best power mods for a 2001 5.9?
What are the best mods for the $$ in a 2001 5.9 Ram? It is a 4wd ext. cab short box with low miles. ALL stock now. Headers, intake, and exhaust? Any suggestions? What about a SC? Thanks for any info..
The exhaust is a must.... Not only do you imporve performance but the sound is awesome. I'd also consider a K & N FIPK, and a fast man throttle body. A hypertech PPIII is a bit spendy but worth the money IMO.
You can add a good cold air kit or ramairbox,(ramairbox best bang for the buck) 52mmtb, m1 and a cam plus a tuner or flashed pcm headers, ypipe, hi flow cat (catbacks low on bang for the buck). Same money you can get a Procharger with a/a intercooler and probably be a bit better than what the mods mentioned will yield. The mods plus the s/c, major iimprovement in hp.
If you want to see how some mods will affect performance I individually track tested (extensively) pretty well all my bolt ons. Page below shows et reductions for mod done.

Yeah some of the cold air kits out there are not that great. Prior to putting the s/c on I had a ramairbox for 5yrs. It really helped on the highway in both performance and mpg.

First time I took it to the track when it was new (1700miles) ran 16.0+(genI K&N fipk) and 3 other stock Indys were running 16.3+. Best et with a stock motor all the bolt ons, gears and slicks with the ramair 13.99.

Did you replace that big stock 8 blade fan with an electric one? you had to see some hp gains there... I was looking at that thing yesterday thinking it is probably taking me 15 hp to run that thing right there on the end of the crank like that...
what do you think?

Fans do help but most of the gain is off the line. When the engine spins to 2500-2700rpm approx, the clutch disengages and the loss caused by the fan is very low. I saw average ets reduced by .05 on the 60' (good amount for short times) but 1/4 mile ets only dropped by .08 seconds. Bang for the buck fans are not that high on the list. They will help increase city mpg if your not into the loud peddle all the time
Thanks, considering she will be 10yrs old this spring, still looks pretty good
The valve covers are the Mopar black wrinkles, sand blasted & power coated. I took the belt sander to the top of them so the ribs and words would stand out better
