new jersey ppl i need help
hey im gonna be getting my lisence in june and i want to put a lift kit and 35's on but i need to know if that would make me fail the inspection like i know i could just go to a garage and get it but i heard you have to go to a special inspection where thay lift one side of your truck up like 22" off the ground and then drop it to make sure your truck will not flip or something like that thanks ~john
yea if its anything over 3in above stock height i think. its called a hi lift test and its a big pain in the ***. you have to take it to a place were they do it. ( theres only like 3 of them in the state) so unless your lucky its a long drive. then you have to wait for like an hour + as they inspect your truck and your not even allowed in to watch. i hated it. thats one thing i really dont want to do again. its really easy to pass though. your truck really has to suck for them to not pass you. were are you from in jersey?
thts awsome heres a place to bring your truck to do some minor off roading if you dont already know about it... if you take Rt.46 to right past teterboro airport and bare to your right youll see that that the highway splits then u make a right at the light and go all the way down it turns into moonchie ave ... your going to pass a place called the gray cliff you make the left at tht intersection and go all the way down to the end it will take you into like a industrial looking area you go to the end and youll see a little opening thts for like 4 wheelers the street makes a left at the end and your going to see a dead end go down there and your going to see on your right a steep drop-in to the trails its extremley muddy and dont get caught going back there lol
Another MVC off-road center is in Manahawkin, down by Long Beach Island. I was told if they think you are too high at inspection they measure from the ground to the door sill to check. I don't know what the limit is on this.
Also, if you have a grill guard with small rails in between the large rails (in front of your headlights) they will fail you for this also. So, take them off before you go.
My truck failed once cause I had window tinting on top of the windshield that came below the tiny marks on both outer edges !!! I was P----ed !!! I rolled out back pulled the whole strip off and went back around.
Iv'e also had them walk back & forth looking underneath for the Catalytic Convertor with the mirror. Then they go get someone else and they do it for a while. Eventually, I 'll walk over and tell them that is there is none on a diesel.
Now, why don't they check headlight alignment anymore ??? I get blinded every morning or evening by someone with a low beam headlight shining up to the sky.
But, the good news is they usually are so bothered by the sound of a Cummins inside "their domain" they rush you through to get rid of you.
Sorry for the rant, but those of you who do not have a strict state inspection, count your blessings. For those like us here on the Forum who take pride in and excellent care of our vehicles, to go there and still get your stones busted is frustrating.

hey,
im from NJ, and i have a three inch lift from rancho on my truck that my hubby put on for me, and im running 35.. the only law that i know have that would prohibit your truck from passing inspection is if your tires are sticking out more than a half an inch out of your wheel wells.. because the tires are much bigger than stock.. you arent going to be able to get the correct backspacing on your tires.. so youll need to get fender flares.
they have the cheap lick and stick kind or the good ones that you can permantly put onto your truck.
but you know NJ as well as i do that NJ has a huge stick in their bums when it comes to this kind of thing.
so make sure that your not sticking out. also when your doing this.. make sure that your transmission is calibrated to be the right speed because you have bigger tires.. you will be speeding even if your truck says your going 55mph.
but the lift isnt a problem, my friend has over 12 inches of lift on his ford super duty. and hes got like 45's under his truck.
but the braking becomes a lot harder on a lift, and you are more prone to transmission problems when you have a lift. make sure you have a heavy duty trans on your truck.
dodges eat transmissions like its cool.. i spent 2400 on a new heavy dusty high performance trans for my truck, and have not had a problem with it.
good luck
