Don't burn it just yet. When I got my 01 off road quad cab, I was getting like 12mpg on the highway. It was bone stock with the same gears and size tires you have. After putting on a cai, throttle body, exhaust and hypertech programmer, I am pushing 19 or 20mpg on the highway. I saw the biggest jump in mpg when I installed the hypertech program. MPG went up a solid 4 mpg from stock to the 87 program. This probably had someting to do with the eleimination of the death flash on my truck when I reprogrammed, but I would defiantely consider doing some of the mods I did to help increase your mpg.
Are you losing any oil, check your plebum. Open up the butterflies in the tb and look down with a mirror at all 4 corners in the pan and see if there is any oil pooling in. When mine went i got really bad mpg, that problem also burnt up one of my valves.
Don't give up - the modifications everyone recommends do work. I just had a magnaflow muffler installed on my truck and I have been getting 1 whole mpg better mileage on the highway (getting over 15.5 mpg now)....plus it sounds and runs better. As soon as I can afford it, the high flow cat is going on and then I'm buying a hypertech programmer. Mileage sucks in these behemoths, but have you ever driven a Suzuki Swift.....good way to die alone in a one vehicle/cat accident if you ask me. Plus, when the invading hordes start coming over the hill (only a matter of time)........wouldn't you rather be in your Dodge Ram 4x4 than a 40mpg Festiva??? I rest my case........
