5.2L is ripping through fuel..$25 in a night...causes?
i think i may have a leak somewhere now...but i just wanted to check to see if this is a problem with anyone else's truck.
right now, it smells like fuel if i let it idle for a minute or two...i could not see a visible leak.
i put $25 worth of gas in, and the next night, and about 60 miles later, i was empty again.
i had recently replaced my cat with the magnaflow because my old one crapped out on me and wouldn't let me rev over 2500 rpms.
any thoughts? thanks
oh, it also has the check engine light on, and it has always been on in the 2 months i had the truck. before this problem it seemed like it was getting about 10 mpg. besides the fuel usage it runs fine and shifts fine.

Thats only roughly 10.2 gallons of gas @2.25 gallon, sounds like 10 MPG cut that in half and thats 5 MPG. Lowest I have ever seen in mine was 8 MPG during the winter with crappy winter fuel mix.
thats what im getting is 8mpg's .... its killing me! but ill never tade it in! ill get a loan for gas before i get rid of the truck
still havnt figured out whats killin my mpgs... when steve has a 01 5.9L and he's pushing damn near 15mpgs..lucky bastard!

Ya I have no idea how he is doing 15 mpg with the heads and the M1, Im gonna break down and replace critical sensors, spark plugs, cap/rotor, wires etc etc and see if that helps any, but im with you, i would get a loan for gas b4 getting rid of it. And the cost to replace with all my options for a new one justifies the extra gas cost.
If you smell gas there could be a leak for sure...go to AutoZone and get your codes read. I HATE it when people don't get they're CE lights checked
Your cars like "Help me! There's something wrong and I hurt!" and your like "Shut up bitch!" and neglecting her!!! That should be domestic abuse!

You may or may not know this but Autozone etc... cannot erase the codes. you will need to go to the stealership, or find some one with a programmer to erase them. if you already know this then ignore me i'm stupid and should be shot.
Check the injectors for leaks at the o-rings, i've had a o-ring go and it pours out fuel constantly.

My Autozone always erases the codes, sounds like your Autozone is lazy. I had O2's throwing codes in my car and they erased them and it threw another so I got a new 02.

I was averaging 14~14.8 mpg for a few months, then for some reason it dropped down to 12.5 or so the last few tanks of gas. I thought I had a cat problem because there was a rattle underneath and took it to the shop to have them look at it and they mentioned that there was a section of the exhaust that was limiting performance... right out of the cat it was necked down to the original 2.5" pipe, we bumped that up to 3" to match the cat and it is way better now. the rattle was not the cat according to them, the rattle was a loose clamp on the section they removed.
I still have not figured out what caused my mileage to go south (havent really spent too much time on it though) but if I get it figured out, mpg should go back up to 14~15mpg I'd think...
