Default Engine Code

My check engine light came on the other day and im just wondering if there is a way on the 96 model to read it without buying a reader. I know that on some vehicles you can do the ignition on off pattern thing and it'll flash somewhere on the dash but i dont think that would work on mine. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,
Ian

Turn the key on, then off, then on, then off, then on and wait. The CE light will blink in sequence.
ie. blink, blink *pause* blink-blink-blink equals code '13'. It always ends with a code '55'

Yeah it works, but it's a pain in the a$$ to try to figure out the "blinks". Got an Autozone near you? If so they will read and clear your codes for free. I do suggest you get a reader, some say its not worth it but you can pull codes that have not caused the CE light to come on. I got one and it has helped already.
