hey guys. If you put in an aftermarket head unit, you must make sure you bypass the factory amp. Most stereo shops will do it for you. If you don't you will fry the outputs on the radio. It will come on, but no sound.. Not a good thing. The factory amp is located under the bottom right kick panel. (Under the plastic panel below the glove box.)

i ran my headunit through the factory amp and its worked fine for a few years....untill recently i redid the whole system and have a different more advanced setup

prolly b/c different headunits put out differnt amount of watts per speaker with higher and lower resistance ... if you have a headunit that pushes 70X4 then yea youll fry the stock amp,,, if you got something that does like 20 or 25X4 then you should be fine..(witch isnt even a true rating)..to eliminate having to use the factory amp (the sound thats produced out of the aftermarket deck is much better then the factory amp can reproduce anyway) just run dedicated speaker wires to all 4 speakers and then run in into the rear of the deck,,, sound much better too .. elminating the OEM wiring witch is junk compared to the stuf you can get at the store

audio is my bag too... any questions pm me

In all honesty wire is wire. Unless your running huge amounts of power for long lengths stock wire is fine for headunit power. Now if your running a nice component set with 100 rms then yes you should use wire bigger than stock. What is stock in the rams 18..16 awg?

you should never have any problem with the deck frying it should be even easier for it than if it actually powered up the speakers with the infinity amps they just take the high signal and amplify it car electronics is how i make a living and id never run new wires unless youre going to get new speakers and wire everything up to an amp even then if you arent giving more than 50 watts per speaker/ component set factory wiring should be just fine just make sure you have a good ground ive seen a few times where decks have fried from people just wrapping their wire around the factory ground and it coming loose we use a nut with the factory bolt and an eyelet to bolt them together which also keeps the bolt in a safe place if they got back to factory

hmmm... the deck that was in my truck when i bought it was fried. i dont know how long it had been in there, but i raplaced it with a top of the line, brand new alpine unit and just used the same harness over again. i didnt touch any amps or either speaker, and i dont have the infinity sound, but after reading this post i am concerned...

the deck wasnt intended for this truck, and i dont want to blow it up before i put it in to the car i bought it for, so do i need to do anything to ensure this wont happen? it seems to me that if all the wires are connected to the proper place and i have a good ground, (which i do) it should continue to function properly as long as i have it in the truck.
