Default vibration noise anyone?

ok, so i have talked to a lot of people about this. and so this time i thought i would see what people on here think.

it is a vibration noise, it comes and goes as it pleases. some days it does not do it at all. it does it weather im going straight, left or right.
it does it at any speed, and last for about 5 seconds each time then goes away.

this is not a constant sound.. though it comes and goes when it feels like it.

it does it in drive, and neutral as well. also when the ac is off or on.
it feels like its coming from the front drivers side. you can feel it vibrate in the steering well.

someone had suggested it was the PSP but we changed that, and it has continued the vibration noise.

if anyone has any ideas on what this might be. i would be more than grateful for any opinion.

its a 2000 dodge ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 5.9 magnum.

Try this link. It has a chart relating vibration to vehicle speed so you can get an idea of where it may be coming from. Hope it helps. http://performanceunlimited.com/docu...tionguide.html

you say it does it in drive or neutral. is it rolling in neutral and drive or at a standstill?

it does it while its rolling down the street. someone had told me that if you kick it in to N while your at speed, and it continues to do it, then its not in the drivetrain because the truck is not in demand.

so that if it does it while its in N then its probably in the steering and or the fan clutch. but the fan clutch has no play in the bearing, its not beating against anything. the pullys are all moving freely.

but i will look into that link OFF_ROAD_TEACHER.

thank you so much for your replies, but more opinions are always welcomed.

while that link is great, its not specific enough. its not a constant sound. and that doesnt give enough info as far as that goes, and it does not really involve certain speed limits. it could happy at 5 mph, or even 55. around here i cant really go faster to see if it does it then. but we will see next time i have to go out onto the main highways.
ill test that in the next couple of days.

Mine was doing funny noises like that just before my wheel bearing crapped out.

yeah, i was just going to say that it's probably a wheel bearing. i had that problem and it would decide when it wanted to vibrate. it eventually turned into a squeek. i just tightened it up and gave her some grease and it was good as new. it tight enough that sometimes it would sit right and then it would and back again. i would definately look into the bearings. -justin
