gas tank/sending unit question
ok - has anyone with the 34 gallon gas tank ever ran it completely (or very close to) empty? (meaning that when you went to fill it back up, it took pretty much 34 gallons to fill it back up?) I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 4x4 QC, and my guage goes down to empty, the light comes on, and the overhead console goes down to 20 miles left (OK, that would be approx 2 gal at 12mpg avg), but when i go to fill it up, it only takes 27 gallons - meaning there's still 7 whole gallons left in the tank. i'm starting to think maybe it's a fuel sending unit problem... any input would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

RE: gas tank/sending unit question
ok i have a 26 gall tank but i think i can shed some light fot ya. i have had kinda the same prob as you (well auchually oppsit but still might apply) my gauge would read 1/4-1/8 tank but id run out of gas i just thought it was an inaurate gauge however wen i filled it up it wasent empty i took it back to dodge and hat it looked at and apperintley the the sending unit will shut the pump off or something like that just before it runs out to stop you from having to reprime the lines wen you start it well my sending unit "thought" it was out of gas even thow it was telling the gauge there was 1/4-1/8 tank and i did have tht much gass in there anyways changed it out and its run fine

RE: gas tank/sending unit question
Probably. There is a known problem with the diesel truck float arms, and I suspect the same is with all trucks. My truck has a tendency for the needle to bounce all over the place. I am getting ready to replace the fuel pump, regulator, and all that and I'm going to see if the bushing in the float assy is worn.
