Default Why oh Why Electrical shock from 99 Ram

okay can't figure this thing out for the life of god, every time I get out after driving and shutting down my 99 Ram quadcab I get shocked, it is strong enough it goes through my leather coat and I can still feel it on my skin, I don't think it it normal static electricity, and at night when it happens you can actually see the spark from the shock, I am almost affraid to put fuel into the thing-----anyone else ever hae this problem, I have check wires, etc etc to locate a problem spot but can't seem to find anything, I even put on additional ground wires fromt the engine block to the frame and to the cab still happens??????????? Any Help?????

It sounds like bad case of static build up. When you're in the truck you are in a box electrically isolated from earth ground by the tires. When you step out and touch earth ground the charge transfered to you in the truck is discharged. You could try putting a hygrometer in the cab to see just how dry it is in there. You may not be old enough to remember it but fuel tanker trucks used to have drag chains or straps that constantly keep the truck at the same electrical potential as earth ground. You're talk about fear of gassing up is not unwarrented. Make sure you discharge static before you do so. Don't get in and out of truck while waiting for fill up. Sliding across seat cover can built up static even though truck is standing still. If you could rig up a temporary conductive drag strap, that would at least prove the point.

Mine does the same, as do most of my other vehicles. I have even seen warning at some of the gas pumps in my area about electostatic discharge from cell phones and getting in an out or your vehicle while pumping gas.

Do you live in a dry climate?

cold air usually means more dry air... remember that..the heat in the air usually brings humiditiy...

jrmcx said it the best... using a grounding strap may help out,,,

i had the same problem with an old truck i had and found out that i had a short to ground building up discharge energy in the chassis,,,

We need to start a club for this, mine does the same thing everytime I run the heater.

Heres a quick way to stop getting shocked. Hold the frame(metal part) of your door before you touch the ground. Not sure why but if I hold my door then get out I dont get shocked, but if I put my foot on the ground then touch the door I get a nice shock.
