After reading this item, I have been wondering why a person couldn't find an in-line filter used for a fuel injection system, and fit it so it could be serviced regularly. Then eliminate the in-tank one.
Well, that COULD be done, but it would eliminate your filtering prior to the fuel going through the pump...which means it's possible that something could get sucked up into your pump and cause some damage or poor performance.

you should hear it click on when u turn the key,my dakota was like that an had to get a fuel pump,everywhere around here wanted 250 to 320 bucks for one,got on summit an got a holley for around 150(for sale)
