Default Yet another Tranny Issue, or is it? - UPDATE

Ok here it goes....

97 V10 4X4 123,000 miles..no mods

Not sure what the heck is going on. Every once in awhile, not all the time mind you, when starting out from a dead stop or slowing down at a light and stepping back on the gas, I feel a lurch, like the drive shaft or gears are not 'hooking up'. At first I thought, S#$% there goes my tranny but the transmission shop could not find anything wrong with the tranny. they suggested that perhaps my transfer case was going out. I totally trust this shop, they have never steered me wrong before and have always gone above and beyond to keep me a satisfied customer. It doesn't slip any other time and the RPM's do not jump. It just chugs once -n- awhile like it wants to go but it won't hook up until it lurches 4 or 5 times. I am totally stumped. By the way everyone that helped me on my brakes...I say thank you. It was the rear abs sensor. 42 dollars from the stealer and she was back to norm.

I have definitely heard about bad transfer cases giving just that symptom. That'd be my first place to check, drain it, see what comes out, if it's burned and full of metal you just found the problem. They're really easy to rebuild, or you can find good used ones pretty cheap. Good luck!

Thanks Batphreak! What kind of handle is that anywhoo! I like it. My wife just informed me that while she was driving it last week she had a terrible grinding noise when she was taking off. She probably told me and I most likely let it go in one ear and out the other. What was that honey!? Anyway, it didn't do that at all for me and this is after I took it too the transmission shop. I'm going to take it back down there tomorrow morning and see if anything has changed. if not, then I would bank on it being the transfer case. I checked the drive shaft and when i move it back and forth there is this binging noise. Like someone is tapping on a small bell. Perhaps the chain is slipping and that is what the grinding noise was. I can still put it in 4 high and low without any issues. Do you or anyone else know of a decent place where i can pick up a new or rebuilt transfer case? rebuild might be the way to go too save some money but I like to keep my options open. If a new one isn't that much more, I might as well get that.

thanks for the info....

Well after driving around for the last week, I just couldn't take the slipping anymore. I took it back to the transmission shop and had them re-pull the pan. This time there was a whole bunch of shavings in the pan. Kinda funny, I sure would have thought that it would have been full of shavings last week. Must have been right as it was going. Anyway a rebuild is in order. I told the guy to put the pan back on so I could drive it home and park it until I had the money, which would be in about a month. He asked me what I was going to do for wheels and I looked down at my feet and smiled. "All leather Personel Carriers", I said. Then he did something that I have never heard any mechanic say, I'll rebuild it now and you can pay me later. I was totally shocked! As I said before, these guys are something else. Lets hope their work is as good their faith in me is. He did state that it could be upwards of $2400, all depending on what needs to be done. But all Clutch packs, gaskets, bands, bearings, electronics, etc will be replaced so I'm expecting it too be right around the price quoted. Anyway, I thank our readers here at DF for allways being there. You guys and gals are great.

wow.... thats the most standup shop ive ever EVER heard of... just for that id throw the tech that rebuilt a small tip..or a case of beer... just to say thanks for bailing you out of a tight jam... thats what i would do atleast..

anyway... i just had tranny work down too... i got a brand new 46RE tourqe converter and aux cooler and some valvebody work (simlar to a shift kit ..but just mainly pumps fluid in P and a few other small adjustments) all the labor and a 3 year warrenty for 2300 and soem change... so if i were you id ask about that... a new tranny would be better then a rebuilt tranny for that amount of money atleast..wouldnt hurt to ask anyway...

hope it works out for ya!
