Default erratic shifting

I have a 2001 1500 quad cab 4X4 with the 5.9L motor. I drive it liked an old man to try to squeeze a few more MPG out of it, but when I feather the throttle from as standing start, I get some very erratic shifting until I get up to 8-10 MPH. When I put my foot in it, it doesn't happen (good reason to keep it floored eh?) Any else experience this and is there a fix for it?

mine was just the oppisite. Rolling the gas on nice and smooth, it ran fine. Floor it and it felt like the drive shaft would fall out. Just kept lurching 4 or 5 times then it would hook up and run fine. Ended up being my transmission. hopefully that is not the case with yours.

I don't think it is a tranny problem. It was a Division of Wildlife Resources truck before I bought it and they service them by the book, also, I don't think they towed much with it as the trailer light plug was screwed up and looks like it has been for some time. By the way, how much did the new tranny cost you? (you know....just in case)

I took it to the autoshop where I teach and had the teacher check it out. On the gas anylizer, hydrocarbons came in at .03 and compression was great. That isn't to say that the transmission isn't hammered....but I don't notice any other issues. It does great on the freeway and the few times I have used the 4WD. I thought I read somewhere recently that there is a throttle cable adjustment that you can make to clear this problem up. I could be mistaken though

I would first check the tv cable. Does the truck set any codes? How does it idle? possible leaky injector?

BadRam,
No codes were on when we tested it. In fact, couldn't find anything wrongwith it even when trying, until I started feathering the throttle. That is when the shifting problem reared it's ugly head. To tell you the truth, it isn't a major issue when it comes to performance, it just doesn't "feel right." It almost seems like it is shifting into an extra gear at the bottom end. I'm stumped!

check your TPS sensor... it may be so bad on the low end the pcm thinks your on-off-on again on the throttle and may be trying to keep up. they get noisy after a while. when that happens you usually 1st see the motor surging at hiway speeds. take it up to 60~70 and put the cruise control on... if you see it surging 200 or so rpm's, swap out the TPS and see how it does.

Is there a way to check them, or do I just replace it? By the way, there is no surging at freeway speeds, with or without the cruise control on. It holds at constant RPM except at low speeds when it does the funky shift thing. I will watch my tach and see what it does next time I can get it to give me an extra shift. I drove it this afternoon, and it didn't do it at all, though after it warmed up I had my foot in it a little more than normal. I guess I just need to keep my foot in it...hehehe
