RE: rear axle question
They all could've come with 4.10s...if you ordered the 4.10 option
The ONLY 2nd gen 1/2 tons that had standard 4.10s were the OFF-ROAD edition Rams that were built in 2000 & 2001. They used the Chrysler 9.25 rear axle, which was the ONLY rear axle available for the 1/2 tons.
I'm not sure why you're looking to swap axles, but if it's just for the gear ratio, you're better off just upgrading the rear-end that you have now with a new gear set

RE: rear axle question
It would be faster, but probably not much cheaper. Good used axles tend to be a bit pricey, even the 9.25. [>:] Plus, if it were me, I'd rather have a new set of gears for my money, than a used axle/differential/gear set that I don't know the history of. That's just my thought on it though.
