Default transmission problem - is dealer trying to screw me?

I have a 2000 ram 2 w.d. 318. with 100,000 mi
My transmission started acting up a few weeks ago by hesitating in reverse.
Two days ago it would not shift up correctly - had to rap it up to 3G before it would shift up.
Now it has a whirring noise and also sometimes just raps out like it is not even in gear. I took it to dealer today and they said it needed new tranny. Said there was shavings in oil and oil was burnt. $2700 including labor.
I took it to a transmission shop - they think it is just a sensor. They said transmission pan was not even pulled off by the dealer.

Who do I believe? How can the dealer say there is shavings in the oil when the pan wasn't pulled off? There are no shavings on the dipstick.

The bad thing is I told the dealer to order me a tranny as I didnt know what else to do but then decided to call a transmission specialist afterword. I called dealer at end of day and told him to put a hold on transmission as I wanted a second opinion and they were not happy and said transmission might already be on its way.

First off screw the stealer because that is all he is trying to do to you. Second if it is just a sensor, let the tranny shop look at is first. Even if it isn't a sensor (which sensor did they say?) I would consider letting a tranny shop install it or buy a tranny from them and do it yourself. The dealer is going to inflate prices alot and most places will offer a warranty on there stuff that is just as good.

I bought my truck with 75k on it. It soon developed a whine in reverse. It than one night started slipping and i had it towed to a transmission place. There are valves that create whine, or shimmy type sound apparantly. The rebuild was 2800 and had a 2 year, 24k warranty. A transmission from dodge comes with a 3 year 36k warranty. I dont know if i would go to the dealer, but i have 98k on the truck now and that same whine is back for the second time, and once in a while after a long trip, my trans will slip badly when i put it in 4x4. I'm just waiting for it to blow once again. I also had metal shavings in my trans fluid. I dont know if thats anything like your having, but good luck with it.

I have had a whine in reverse since I got the truck at 35k miles and the head mechanic at the dealer said it was normal. 14k miles later it is starting to make a strange noise in park that just doesn't seem right. Don't know what the problem is but unfortunately I'm guessing the tranny is going bad.

I would forget about the dealer and take it to a reputable tranny shop that knows Dodge transmissions. shott8283 just got his completely rebuilt for like $2k. The dealer has rebuilt mine twice under warranty - twice being the key word here....(two different dealers also) The dealer has parameters they have to work under - the independent shop doesn't. In other words, the dealer can only put stock parts and settings back in it - where as the independent guy that knows what he is doing can "tweak" the tranny and valve body, etc., to make the tranny work better......

your right...the dealer is trying to screw you...thats what they do. they sell cars and screw people plan and simple. its a horible thing that they try and sell you a warrenty and then do everythingin their power to try to screw you out of honering their warrenty that THEY sold you... bunch of croooks..trust me i used to work at a dealership and you should hear what the guys in the back say when they arnt around customers... let it happen to me 1 time and ill own that dealership after im done suing the sh*t out of them... believe you me.... one word that usually makes dealerships to remove their heads from their asses is "lawyer" they HATE lawyers b/c they know they are doing something wrong.. mention a lawyer to them and theyll shut up and do what they are saposed to, sometimes atleast.

ive only seen 1 dealership that is really really good about their warrenties and services... the rest just suck ***

Eh, go with APS precision and get the bullet proof tranny (I think thats what it was anyways). Might spend a few more but hell, not having to change the bitch for a long while is GOOD

I don't know about the shipping cost, but you can buy a solid tranny for ~$2k put it in yourself and be done with it. There are alot of hard luck stories out there about people who had their trannies rebuilt by the dealer only to return 10k miles, 20k miles, etc. to have it done again.

silverram99 summed it up best:
First off screw the stealer because that is all he is trying to do to you
I am starting to believe that these guys go to a special school to learn how to fvck people over.

Holy****, I've been astericked.
