Do I need a new Fan Clutch
I think I am in need of a new fan clutch. My fan is on all the time that I know of. It is on as soon as I start the truck whether it is cold or warm. Would a napa fan clutch be a good replacement? Thanks a lot
The fan is always running when the engine is on, it never fully disengages. With the engine off, grab the fan and see if you can turn it...it shouldn't freewheel, but it also shouldn't be locked up...another thing to try is start the engine...take note of the 'roar' of the air moving...rev the engine to like 2500-3000...the 'roar' will be much louder, but after a few seconds, the 'roar' will noticeably quiet down...this is the fan clutch working normally...at 2500 rpm, the majority of the time, you're on the highway, so less need for air movement, nature takes care of it.
If you have the time and the gas, you can let it idle for a long time, fully warm...you'll hear the 'roar' get loud for a moment as the temp. increases, then it'll get quieter again as it cools a bit, over and over. Hope this helps.

if you're just sitting there idling and it squeaks it's the belt. if it's really new then it's still adjusting and will eventually (it should anyway) stop squeaking.

Take a spray bottle with water, engine running, and spray the belt a few squirts without spraying yourself in the face...if it stops squealing momentarily, it's the belt...if not, it's likely a bad bearing in an accessory.

Not always the case. Mine would stop if I sprayed silicone on it, but it was the tensioner causing it. It had worn to the point where it was horribly out of alignment with the rest of the accessory drive.
