rebuilding a 9 1/4 axle
hey i have to rebuild my axle you can move the pinion up and down in and out so it needs to be redone i got a whole rebuild set includes carrier bearings and pinion bearings the crush sleave nut seals all that plus outer wheel bearings 4.56 gears a factory trac loc royal purple fluid all the parts that could be replaced basicly on the whole rear end my question is have any of you atempted to rebuild one of these axles how hard would it be and i have the manual it says you need some tool to adjust the carrier clearance is there a way to make one or buy one i dont know any help on rebuild it also along with the dana 44 in the front i going to rebuild both any help on doing both would be great thanks
You need three items: 1 - pinion depth setting tool ( to set the pinion depth using the spec etched on the pinion gear). 2 - A inch/lbs torque wrench that goes to 50 in./lbs( to measure pre-load). 3 - Also a dial micrometer with a magnetic bast to check gear lash.
you dont need the pinion depth tool. just torque the crush sleeve littl eby little until you get the right pattern on the ring. You can down load gear info from Randys ring and pinion. it will show you what a proper pattern should be. just dont go too far with the crush sleeve or you'll have to replace the crush sleeve.
You dont need a special tool for setting the backlash. just the dial indicator. the adjusters on the side can be manuvered with a small punch or a small beefy screw driver.
the D44 is a little trickier.
My suggestion is to press off the origional carrier bearings and the pinion bearings and sand the inside of the bearings down so they will slide right on the carrier and pinion without pressing. that way you can add shims as needed until you get it right than you dont have to press your new bearings on and off (which you will probably have to do even if you figure out the math).
Also I didnt see where you mentioned if you got a new carrier for the front or if you got "thick" gears for the front.
Also, If you got the rebuild kit for the D44 made by Genuine gear send it back. Because they dont have a rebuild kit for the dodge 94-01 D44. You'll have to get a Yukon rebuild kit.
Been there done that.
Or if you do have the Genuine gear kit, I have the bearing you'll need to make the kit usable. they sent me two after I told them I didnt have the right one. you could have it for real cheap. Its collecting dust on my work bench still in the package and box

well the rear is what i mainly worried about i got a trac loc for that with 4.56 and a rebuild kit i just want to fix it before it completely blows the only thing i have for the front are the 4.56 gears and the locker that replaces the spider gears so i will be using the factory case havent bought a kit for it yet still is tight up front rear is what i mostly want fixed i think about just find someplace to do it for me right because i dont want to screw it up i sure i could do it but its my first time
well when regearing to 4:10 or higher on the front D44 you either have to buy a new carrier housing or get thick gears. Being that you have the gears you'll need the new carrier.
just make sure you order the Yukon rebuild kit.
also, the trac loc is simple to install.
