Default Setting timing

How do i set the timing for a 95 5.2? The timing advance is computer controlled but how to a remove the advance from the computer to get the proper timing set up? what should the timing be without the advance? which cylinder is #1 is is the first on teh drivers or passengers side? not too familiar with these engines and trying to learn?

#1 is on the driver's side. You can get aftermarket controllers to advance and retard timing or (best IMO) get a custom flash. Timing will change based on engine temp., air temp., tps voltage, etc.

Programmers and chips (Superchips, Hypertech) will also advance your timing.

I am trying to find out how to properly orientate the distributator body, and it looks like the drive gear could go in several different ways. (the gear that runs from the cam to the oil pump. )

Take the plugs out and manually crank the motor until the timing mark on the balancer lines up with TDC. Put the distributor in so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 hole on the distributor.

Make sure that when you get TDC, to make sure your on the intake stroke (I think thats right). Which means make sure that your intake valve opened first before it closed, ..

If i'm wrong someone correct me =)

It should be on the compression stroke (both valves closed). It is on the compression stroke that the plug fires.
