they can rust from the inside and under pressure, start leaking. the best thing to prevent this is proper cooling system maintanance. flush and refill with the right amount of coolant & use distilled water.
I personally have never had one fail, but know of a few others who have. every time the cooling system had gunk in it from lack of maint.

I have to ask, what do these people do or don't do to their vehicles for all these otherwise normal functioning parts to fail. People need to follow the servicing recommended by Chrysler and sometimes go one step further as Steve said. JMO

proper maint. will prevent alot of these failures. speaking of which, my wifes '03 corolla which we just got needs to have the cooling system flushed... damn, another weekend project [&:] but hey, I dont want her stuck on the side of the road so I'll take the time to flush it, check the hoses to make sure they're not cracked or in need of replacement and refill it with some good 5 year coolant and distilled water.
The problem with automotive coolant is it is only good for two years unless you get the elc, then i believe it's three years. That's why I run Heavy duty truck coolant. It's good for six years, comes with anticorrosive additives. Costs more but well worth it.
