Default gears

well this is probably a really dumb question, but i jsut dont know much about gears so ill ask it anyways

if/when i get better gears for my tires, will i have to get them front and rear? or can i get them just rear (to save on teh cash...) im not getting them for offroad purposes, but will 4x4 still engage and work correctly if i have 4.10s or 4.56s in the back and the stock gears in teh front? thanx.

that will not work. If you want to do the rear you can but you wont be able to use 4x4

gears have to be matched front and rear. the transfer case does not have differential action, so it outputs the same amount of rotations for the rear driveshaft and the front driveshaft (when 4 wheel drive is engaged)

lets say you have 4.10's in the rear, and 3.55's up front. when you engage 4WD, remember that the same amount of rotations go to the front and rear driveshaft. so if it takes 4.10 rotations of the rear driveshaft to turn the rear tires once and it takes 3.55 rotations of the front driveshaft to turn the front tires once.... well, somethings gonna break.

the ring and pinions come seperate for the front and rear. you'll also need master install kits.

the front will require a different carrier or thick gears

You HAVE to get master install kits? I thought the minor install kit is all you'd really need. The only diffrence is that the master install comes will all new bearings right? Or something like that, but I could be wrong thats why I ask

You dont have to get the master install kits but it would be ashame to have the bearings fail and cost you $1000 for a new axle because you didnt spend an extra 20-30 bucks.
That and you would be pressing the origional bearings on and off a bunch of times not a good idea to keep them on after they have had over 50k miles on them.

Its insurance.
