Grr it's broke again
Ok guys need alittle input here. I have an 01 ram 5.9 4x4 with Quad Cab auto tranny and 6' bed. I've owned this truck for a year now and these are the things I've had to replace on it. Front brake pads decided to separate from the backing plate. $400 later and all new brake hardware and I was back on the road. Funky shifting problem with 3rd gear and OD fixed that $55 for a new TPS sensor. Rear diff grenaded fixed under warranty but still. Consumed about 1 quart of oil per tank full of gas and pinged like nobodies business. Pulled the intake fixed the plenium gasket and changed the PCV valve around and such $60 to get that straight.
Now the AC went out of it. My wife took it in to see what the problem was and according to the dealer it's the darned Evaporator core. $300 for the part and almost $500 in labor to replace it, no way am I gonna pay that. From what I can tell the dash has to come out. I've pulled the dash on my S10, but haven't had it out of the Dodge. What fun that is going to be. Does anybody have an idea of where you can get the Evaporator core cheaper new? I don't want to get a used unit being it is gonna be such a PITA to get to. Also is it about time to push this darn truck off a cliff? My 96 never had these problems I should have kept it.

Where did you get a TPS for only $55. My dealer charges $350 and $700 labor.

TPS is a Throttle Position Sensor and shouldn't have been more than1/2 hour labor max (if you'd actually pay someone to do change this). And that's it the mechanic smokes half a pack during the procedure. You sure you're not thinking of something else?
Try Red Angel! I had the same problem a leak in the evaporator. Took it to an A/C repair shop the gave me about the same estimate as you got. My brother is the manager of Advanced Auto Parts and told me to try this as a guy that worked for him used to work for an A/C shop. He said that A/C shops a lot of time use this for 30 dollars and charge you for work they never did. I had a huge leak in my evaporator. I would refill the system then within 2 days it hadcompletely leaked out again. So I tried Red Angel and no more leaks at all. I even got the system shot with a UV light and no leaks a present. A/C blows nice and cold. I did that in May and now it's September. To me it's worth a shot even if it does not work.
You will need a special adpator to put it into the system as it takes a syringe hook ip.

I can't find the syringe adaptor you need to put it in the system. I know Advanced Auto sells it but unsure if they sell it to people. They might just sell it to repair shops. I know they only sell Red Angel to repair shops. But anyway it's worth looking in to.
Good luck

I saw some stuff at walmart a few weeks ago. It was refrigerant with a sealer mixed in. All you needed was one of those universal adapters to hook up to the "hand grenade" style refrigerant can. Don't know it it works well or not.
If you do the evap replacement your self compare you new evap to the old one, especially if you get an aftermarket one. I've seen a few one that were really cheap and had maybe half the cooling fins he factory one had. They don't perform well and your a/c will never be cold only slightly coolish
