Default Advice on changing belt tensioner

anyone out there done one?

I bought one to replace and my haynes manual doesn't cover how to do it. The instructions that came with it are not detailed. Just wondering if there are any caveats or anything that someone might know of and can pass along. Hoping to do it this weekend. I have changed the belt myself several times, but never the tensioner. The belt is fairly new, the tensioner is oem in my 98 (built in 97) 57k on it so that's why I believe the noise I am hearing is the tensioner.

appreciate any advice, thanks

No trick to it. Remove the belt. Unbolt the old one. Bolt the new one in. Put the belt back on

Just changed mine yesterday...after letting the new one sit around for a couple months [8D] I could immediately tell how worn my old one was when I went to put the belt back on [:-]

the tensioner i bought has a long threaded bolt on the back of it. there is no place on the front i can see to use to tighten it if that makes any sense. is that what yours looked like?

do i need a special tool?

Download the service manual in the merry christmas thread. For my truck I think you have to remove the ignition coil to get to the bolt int back. Hope this helps

On the 5.9, you need to remove the coil, then remove the 15mm nut from the "long threaded bolt" as you called it Probably the same on a 5.2, but don't know, you didn't specify an engine.

Ah, the V8s are different then. Sorry [8D] I've never worked on a Magnum era 318/360 [>:] Only the good ol LA motors

Even though the directions above are correct, you should probably do as suggested and download the factory service manual from the "merry christmas"

Lol, I just changed mine last weekend too, after it sitting around for a few months. Anyway, yea, for the 5.9/5.2 unbolt the braket that hols the stock coil, and remove that, then on the backside of the tensioner, is that threaded bolt/rod, uses a 15MM nut, unbolt that and it will come off. After removing the braket for the coil, you can put a bolt back in to help keep the tensioner pully assy. from turning when your truying to loosen the 15MM nut.
