Default Cousin's Ram ABS Problem

Hey guys,

Hope you can help us out on this one. My cousin has a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 w/ 5.9L, and ext cab. Its a carbon copy of mine except that its got the bigger motor. (and its BONE STOCK ) Either way, I promised him I'd do some searching on his problem. The problem is as follows. His ABS and BRAKE lights come on occationally and when he does he looses cruise, and after a while they go out and cruise comes back. The lights come on only after 38 mph and only when he's pulling his trailer. Don't know if its throwing a code or not, i'll get back to you on that one. He says its not the sensor in the diff, (and honestly i dont know what he's talking about with that one.) because he changed it already. Any help would be greatly appreciated, by both him and myself. Thanks guys!!!

Sincerely,

Evan Perkovich

It's more than likely a vacuum leak or just weak vacuum. Put a vacuum gauge on it and compare your readings to this:

It could be a problem with the diaphram in the booster..... a pin hole leak that only shows up when braking under load perhaps. In this case you could extend a piece of vacuum hose into the cab, hook it to the gauge, and observe the readings 'when you're towing over 38 mph'. It is interesting that you mention codes. I was talking to a guy in the pub just the other night about how the OBDII system will tell you if there is any little kink in the emissions system, but alot of problems that might cause you to lose power or other function gets overlooked. One word.. California

Any codes? Take it to Autozone and have them hook it up, even if its an old code and he hasnt unhooked battery may shed some light on it
