Rattling noises underneath my ram
I am a new member and have been experiencing rattling noises underneath my truck. I read in your section about the recall of the catalytic converters and all the symptoms other members described is what i am experiencing. My truck is a 98 model with the 5.9 liter engine and has 108,000 miles on it. Does anyone know if the dodge dealer will replace it because of all the complaints and recalls on this emission part even though i am past my warranty?
I have a 98 5.2 and when I went to the dealer they said there hadnt been a recall on my truck so I couldnt get the new cat. Your best bet is to jst go and see wat they tell you.
Does it sound like a piece of tin rattling? First thing I would check is see if any of the heat shields around that cat or above the muffler are loose. Most of the time it's those shields that will give you a rattling sound. If it's the cat, I would call or have a dodge dealer take a look at the cat and see if it's wearing out on the inside and see if yours is covered under that new warrenty.
Another thing to check is see if any of the muffler pipe hooks that are welded to the pipes broke off. I had 2 that the weld broke off the pipe and the darn thing was rattling against the pipe. I just removed the broken piece of hook and left the rubber mount connected to the frame mount.

I had a rattling noise coming from my gas tank heat shields. I fixed those, but I also have a broken exhaust mount right by my transfer case that rattles as well.
But if you are experiencing all the right symptoms, it's most likely your converter. Take a copy of one of those articles in to the dealer and ask them about it. Dealers hate doing recall work...because the techs get paid crap wages for it, so a lot like to claim that there is no recall even when there is [:'(] You should've heard the complaining when I took my Ram in for a recall that involved re-wiring part of the dash [8D] Just take proof, and have them check it out.
