Getting codes on 99 Ram
I've read that you cannot get CEL codes to display on the odometer on 99 Rams. My truck was manufactured on 10/98. I've tried the key on-off three times and nothing happens. I've tried holding the tripometer button down and turning on the key, both once and three times. The only thing that happens is the guages seem to go through a self check, but I don't get any codes to come up in the tripometer. Since I am having an issue right now with the ABS and brake light coming on, I thought I should have a stored code.
Are there any other 99 owners that can or cannot get codes. If you can, I would appreciate knowing the procedure. Thanks.

My friend has a 99 Ram and he cant get the codes either, whats the problem you are having with the ABS light coming on...? I have the exact same problem, my abs doesnt work and the light doesnt come on, and I have no idea whats goin on.
The other day the ABS light and brake light started staying on and the speedometer doesn't work below 20 mph. I'm not sure if the ABS system actually works or not, since I haven't hit the brakes hard enough to test them. The truck seems to shift fine, although I think some others have had trouble with shifting when this problem occurs.
Does your ABS light come on when you first turn on the ignition? It should, if not your bulb could be burned out. So you might have the same problem with the rear speed sensor. I think that is the problem with mine. I'm going to replace the sensor today hopefully and I'll post back if that solves the problem.

Still wondering about my original question of getting codes on a 99 Ram.
'98 models had the code reading feature disabled. Some '99 models may have also had this "feature" carried over to them. I'm not sure when they switched back to allowing people to read their own codes.
Certain codes (usually ABS) are sometimes unreadable no matter what year you have....or model/brand for that matter. [:'(]
Have you tried going to autozone or checker to have your codes read? Those places will usually do it for free.

rico - Yes, I have the digital odometer.
The Burning Rom - I'm afraid that is what is wrong with my truck, the code reading feature is disabled. I have a neighbor and a friend who are mechanics and have scan tools. It's just nice to be able to check for codes ocassionally, like every time you change the oil, to see if any codes have been set that don't activate the CEL light. I've done this several times on my other vehicles. Now that I have a better understand of codes, I've found it's a great way of keeping an eye on the "health" of the vehicle. I would like to get a programmer, probably Hypertech. I assume I would be able to read codes with one of these on my truck. Thanks for your replies.
