Default Ram 5.9 v8 Possible Issues

Hello all! I purchased a 98 Dodge Ram with low miles earlier this year and so far I have to admit I love it! Later this year I will roll over 60k miles and was hoping if anyone would provide some possible issues to be on the look out for. I have already changed out all fluids and replaced air and transmission filter. Any problems characteristic of this engine or truck?

Thanks!

Heads cracking, plenum gasket, and TPS sensor just to name a few. Also, take care of your tranny; fluid, filter and bands.

Hey RedMagnum,

Go to the top of the topics page and look for the FAQ that was started by Steve00RAM360. It has some good info for things to watch for.

Also, in the same area as the FAQ, look for the topic MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS. That is a PDF for the 01 RAM service manual. Lots of it is applicable to us 98 Ram owners.

Good luck with yours. I've loved mine but I'm now planning on replacing her with a new 06 CTD 1-ton.

Burning Rom,

What are the syptoms for bad axle seals?

Thanks,
Differential fluid leaking out either end of the axle tube...usually down the steering knuckle.

With larger tires on the truck, you also accelerate the wear on the wheel hubs/bearings and the ball joints. [:'(]

Not much different than my 99', stereo adjuster on sterring wheel fell off, catalic converter went bad (under government warranty) cylinder went bad from it so I took it from getting fixed straight to another dealer and traded it in for 01' H/O Cummins! Do not regret it. But nice burner. Oh yeah watch for the crappy gas mileage! Trac bar went out also (common on Dodge) see if it is under government recall warranty if it has not already been replaced. Good Luck! But a good lookin' truck!

Thanks chopper1, same to you! Lift kit is Dick Cepek, wheels are MT 2, 37" Swamper SSRs, air raid cold air intake, diamond plate box and box rails. List goes on! I've never had so much fun spending $$$

fyi I had my factory stereo and speakers gutted yesterday and Best Buy actually charged me extra labor on my regular cab. You have to remove the back seat belts to get to the 5 1/4" in back. Also note if you have the Infinity system expect some extra work wiring. I got half way in and decided to let a professional handle the re wiring (Best Buy). You'll know right away if you pull out a factory 6x9 with an amplifier attached!
