Tapping/Knocking underside
Hello, I am a long-time reader but first time poster.
I have a 2001 Ram 1500 5.9L gas with auto tranny.
I have a tapping/knocking sound coming from the underside of the truck. I can also feel under the gas/brake pedal area. It feels like someone is under the truck tapping on the frame rail with a wooden hammer handle. It seems to do this both while the truck is sitting in park and while driving down the road, but it does not do it constantly.
I have been under the truck while it was doing it, and it seems to be localized around the back of the oilpan, the bellhousing or the front of the tranny, but I could not trace it closer than that.
Anyone run into this or have any ideas?
Thanks

RE: Tapping/Knocking underside
This could be noise from loose ceramic pieces rattling in the catalytic converter. There is a recall on the converters if your vehicle meets their age and mileage parameters. I have the same problem with a 98 1500 and the catalytic converter has to be replaced but as this does not effect anything, I am in no hurry.
