Default Automatic transmission swap

Hello everyone. I wanted to ask you guys what do you think about swaping a manual tranny for an auto tranny? I have a 2001 Ram 2500 4WD 5.9L V8 and I'm really bored of the manual tranny. I would like to upgrade it to an auto tranny, but someone told me its kind of a difficult thing to do. This person told me that I will need a new computer, trans, torque converter, wiring harness, all new steering column pieces, etc, etc. the last person he knew tried something like this spent almost $10,000.00 and now has a giant boat anchor. never got it going. Any word about this?

Thanx

That list sounds accurate. Not sure it would cost $10k to do, but would definitely run you $4-5k just to get the parts together. You also might need a different transfer case. I'm not sure if the input shaft on yours would be splined correctly for the automatic transmission. Also, the driveshaft would be the incorrect length after the swap....unless you could find a smashed 2001 5.9L 2500 truck to take the parts off of.

It's a LOT of work and VERY invovled. Almost to the point where you'd be better off trading your truck for what you really wanted.

Thanks TBR for the advice. You're right, I think trading my car would be the best. However I saw this trannys that claim that they are bolt on and don't require any wiring.

http://www.maddog-transmissions.com/

They sell whole set that include tranny, torque converter, cooler and core. They hace several models and several stages for each model of tranny.

Any word on this guys??

Thanx

He doesn't have any transmissions that would work in your truck...at least not easily. All the ones I saw in the product list were GM transmissions.
